Objectives: To compare the efficacy of two different intravenous bolus doses of 50 mcg and 100 mcg phenylephrine for preventing hypotension following spinal anesthesia during ceserean section. Subjects and methods: A prospective descriptive study on 60 parturients undergoing cesarean section who were allocated into two groups. Group I (n = 30) received 50 mcg phenylephrine intravenously and Group II (n = 30) received 100 mcg phenylephrine intravenously. All patients were given bolus immediately after hypotension. Results: Mean blood pressure in group II was higher than group I at many time-points but both the doses of phenylephrine were equally efficient in prevention of hypotension after spinal anesthesia during ceserean section. Heart rate in group II was significantly lower than group I from T3 to T10 following spinal anesthesia (p < 0.05). Total dosage of phenylephrine consumed in group I was significantly lower than in group 2 (65 47.4 mcg versus 180 103.3 mcg; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Phenylephrine intravenous bolus dose of 50 mcg at each time after spinal anesthesia during caeserean section had the preventive effect on hypotension that was equal to phenylephrine dose of 100 mcg. However, the incidence of bradycardia was higher with phenylephrine 100 mcg.
