Objectives: To compare treatment results and side effects of 2 regimens for moderate and severe acne. Subjects and methods: A prospective, comparative controlled clinical trial on 280 patients with common acne at 18 - 30 at 103 Military Hospital. Results: After 3 months of treatment, the study group achieved the results as follows: excellent: 31.43%, good: 57.86%, fair: 8.57% and medium 2.14%. These percentages in the control group were 32.14%, 58.57%, 7.86% and 1.43%, respectively. In terms of adverse effects, condition of dry skin, skin redness, desquamation, cheilitis and perioral dermatitis were found with the corresponding rate of 54.29%, 42.86%, 32.14%, 28.57%, 25% and 3.57%; These rates in the control group were 79.29%, 85.71%; 86.43%; 78.57%; 64.29% and 32.86%, respectively. Particularly, acne outbreak during the treatment was observed in 3.57% of the patients compared to 32.86% of the controls. Conclusion: 1. Treatment results in 2 groups were similar. 2. Undesirable effects: Dry skin, redness, desquamation, cheilitis, perioral dermatitis and acne outbreaks in the research group were significantly lower than the control group.
