Objectives: To describe the real status of knowledge and practices in prevention of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) of caregivers at 3 districts, Hau Giang province in 2013. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study; directly interviewing research subjects with pre-designed questionnaires. A total number of 1,573 people directly childcare were selected in the sample. Results: In terms of knowledge, 69.5% know well about the high risk of HFMD among under-five children; 21.5% know that transmission route via the digestive tract is the main contributor; 86.5% know that the disease can be preventable. The incidence of the caregivers know the measures for personal hygiene, house, toys, eating and drinking for children and adults ranged from 14.0 - 75.4%; 74.1% understand that the disease can get replapsed; 87.8% are aware that HFMD is dangerous. Regarding practice, the incidence of the caregivers knowing how to manage properly in case of sick children are 42.1 - 95.0% and 4.5 - 58.6% of them have a grasp of child-care measures ; 45.3 - 88.4% of the caregivers know the right practical protective measures. Conclusion: Knowledge and practice of HFMD prevention among caregivers from 1 to 5 years old in 3 districts, Hau Giang province is still limited. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen communication and education on HFMD prevention and control measures for child caregivers in these localities.
