Objectives: To illustrate the current situation and identify a number of factors affecting the construction, use and preservation of hygienic latrines of the Khmer. Subjects and methods: This was a cross sectional study combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. The sample size of 390 Khmer households in O Lam commune, Tri Ton district, An Giang
province by 2020 was analysed according to the one-rate reference formula. Data was collected through interviewing household representatives, observing latrines with checklists, in-depth
interviewing with 12 representatives of local authorities and some households. Results: 66.7% of households had latrines and the rate of using latrines reached 74.1%. Households using the hygienic latrines was 43.08%, of which the septic tank latrine and soakage pits latrine was
53.6% and 46.4% respectively. Research has identified a number of factors affecting the construction, use and preservation of latrines of Khmer people such as age, gender, education, occupation of the household head; household economics, the role of women in the family; knowledge of diseases and risks to health, attitudes and beliefs of interviewees.
